How long is too long, that is the question!

Have you ever sat down to write your resume and before long you had amassed over 5 pages and are toying with the idea of keeping that length.

Let’s just summarise this guide by stating that LESS IS MORE WHEN IT COMES TO RESUMES!

A resume is simply a starting guide for recruiters to match potential employee’s to job applications, the document should be professional in nature, avoiding anything too personal and provide a quick snapshot of the applicant's history.

THREE main resume lengths are generally accepted, those include;

ENTRY LEVEL

An entry level resume is usually provided by first-time job applicants, often these are children who are just finishing school. An Entry level resume should be short, sharp and shiny with all information supplied resigned within a one-page spread.

MID CAREER

By this stage, job seekers have often been employed for several years and have plenty of experience to pull from. Previous job experience should be limited to less than ten years unless vital to the application, with small points detailing the requirements of each position (around a max of 5 points per job). In creating a resume, mid-level applicants should work towards a two-page document with plenty of white space between information to avoid a cluttered mess.

SENIOR LEVEL

It is at this point that resumes begins to extend out, often senior level executives have achievements which are required to be listed for specific roles. These resumes often reach three or more pages and are frequently changed from resume format to CV format to cope with the increase in information.

Senior level executives are the only applicants who should provide a three-page resume; otherwise, the recruiter may decide it is too much trouble and not even choose to view the resume, placing it in the no pile.

When creating a resume remember the following;

  • A standard font no smaller than 10.5 and no larger than 12.
  • Use 1-inch margins.
  • Be vigilant of paragraph spacing.
  • Avoid skill duplication.
  • Do not date back further than ten years.
  • White space is your friend.
